Iron Mill Lofts was originally built in 1871 as Eagle Iron Works, a business employing nearly 100 workers. The building was home to a machine factory where steam engines, boilers, castings, and other iron products were manufactured. Its founders, Henry Hoff and John Fontaine, were influential Philadelphians, holding positions in city government. Fontaine, even patented the hollow pressure point, seen above.
